ABOUT THE FOLK COSTUME:
The traditional costume of the island of Susak is unique in the world and the shortest in Europe. The timeless and attractive women's costume, beautifully handcrafted with vivid colors, catches the eye with what can be considered the very first miniskirts in Europe, known as 'kamižoti' by the locals. These costumes are layered and luxurious, consisting of up to six skirts adorned with handmade lace. They are worn with white shirts, matching vests, and long pink, orange, or red stockings, along with colourful scarves.
The island of Susak has various types of costumes, ranging from everyday attire in darker colors to festive garments in vibrant hues. Depending on age and marital status, the colour of the costume changes.
Today, the festive costume is most commonly seen and is worn on special occasions such as holidays, weddings, or folk celebrations. During these events, the people of Susak, as well as those who love dance and the island's traditions, perform the Susak dance. Creating this costume requires a lot of effort, as it consists of numerous pieces, and it is estimated that about a hundred meters of fabric are needed to make one costume.
