Eco-campaign “The Sea Knows, the Island Remembers” on Lošinj

On the first weekend in April, a large two-day eco-campaign “The Sea Knows, the Island Remembers” was held at several locations on the island of Lošinj, during which a total of 430 divers, volunteers and citizens joined forces to remove more than 40 m3 of waste from the Lošinj seabed and shores.
This year, approximately one hundred divers from numerous visiting and local diving clubs responded to the invitation by the SUBSEASON diving centre. With the technical support of 105 volunteers on boats and on the shore, 88 divers collected approximately 20 m3 of different waste (predominantly glass bottles and car tyres) from the seabed of the port of Mali Lošinj. At the same time, about a hundred employees of Jadranka turizam d.o.o. collected an additional 8 m3 of waste from the shore from Velopin to Borik. The local committee of Veli Lošinj gathered about 40 volunteers for the cleaning campaign, who cleared the promenade and the coast from Feral to Rovenska of plants and waste, while at the same time, 16 divers cleaned the port of Veli Lošinj with the help of a dozen volunteers on the shore. In Nerezine, 25 participants joined the campaign and cleaned the Mirna beach and the port of Nerezine, while on the second day of the campaign, 85 divers and about 40 volunteers on the shore cleaned the seabed of Čikat Bay.
With the aim of raising public awareness of the issue of waste on the seabed, shore and beaches, as well as promoting sustainable solutions for the preservation of the marine environment, in 2022, around 300 participants also collected more than 30 m3 of waste as part of this campaign.

We are extremely proud of the results we achieved, and we are particularly pleased with the large turnout of volunteers from the local community. A big THANK YOU to everyone for their contribution! See you next year, said Jelena Basta, president of the Blue World Institute, on behalf of the organisers.

Thank you to all the participants of this year’s big eco-campaign “The Sea Knows, the Island Remembers”. I am glad that a large number of participants and locations participated again, which is ultimately the result of the efforts and education that the destination invests in caring for the environment and raising ecological awareness, both of its guests and its citizens. Let’s not forget that natural beauty is still the top reason why our guests decide to visit us, said Dalibor Cvitković, Director of the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board.

With great enthusiasm and dedication, the employees of Jadranka turizam d.o.o. once again participated in cleaning the beautiful beaches on the idyllic stretch from Velopin to Borik beach, with a total length of 9 km. Their main goal was to ensure that our guests and fellow citizens enjoy a clean, tidy and enchanting environment. This year, an impressive number of over 100 employees of Jadranka turizam d.o.o. and their families joined the campaign, showing their strong commitment to environmental protection and joint contribution, said Dejan Jakovljević, Executive Director of the campsite – Jadranka turizam d.o.o., also pointing out that it is crucial to contribute as much as possible to the sustainable development of the island with our actions and campaigns in order to preserve the environment for future generations who will continue to cherish the same values.

20 pine trees planted on Lošinj
As part of this year’s two-day eco-campaign, as well as the project aimed at encouraging the development of sustainable tourism by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and the Croatian National Tourist Board named Hrvatska prirodno tvoja (Croatia naturally yours), students of the eco-group of the Ambroz Haračić High School, children from the Cvrčak kindergarten and children who are members of Our Children Association of Mali Lošinj planted twenty pine seedlings in the area of the Kadin – Zagazinjine promenade in Mali Lošinj.
After much active work and cleaning, the participants enjoyed their lunch and a free tour of the unique museum in the Mediterranean – the Museum of Apoxyomenos.
This year, the campaign “The Sea Knows, the Island Remembers” was organised by the Blue World Institute and the diving centre SUBSEASON, with the support of the Town of Mali Lošinj, the Tourist Board of the Town of Mali Lošinj, Jadranka turizam d.o.o., Municipal Services Cres-Lošinj, CPA Mali Lošinj and numerous associations, clubs and others.
